Omexom completes upgrade of transformer in Manapouri

Omexom New Zealand, then Electrix, was awarded a new contract with Meridian Energy in late 2021. The initial contract was for 12 months to complete enabling works, and the automation upgrade of one of seven 128MW generators at Manapouri power station.
The station is New Zealand’s largest hydro electric power station, yet has no road access. This is because it sits within Fiordland National Park and generates from 180m underground below Lake Manapouri, presenting unique challenges.
Fast forward to December 2024 and a new transformer is being commissioned, assembled and installed by Omexom. The new automation assists Meridian in maintaining its generation commitments through winter 2025 and beyond.
Over the past three years, the project has seen many changes, which have also brought opportunities for Omexom. The initial timeline of one year for Omexom has now extended to over eight, and the strong relationship between Omexom and Meridian has brought about other opportunities outside of Manapouri.
